Do Aluminium Fences Rust? Care, Cleaning & Lifespan Explained

The short answer is no: and here is why, plus how to keep a powder-coated aluminium fence looking new, how long it lasts, and what coastal South East Queensland homes should know.

It is one of the first things people ask about an aluminium fence: will it rust? It is a fair question: anyone who has watched a steel or wrought-iron fence bleed orange down a wall knows how quickly rust can ruin a good-looking fence. The good news is that aluminium simply cannot rust. Here is the science behind that, the small amount of care an aluminium fence does need, and how long you can expect it to last.

The quick answer

  • Aluminium does not rust: rust is iron oxide, and aluminium contains no iron.

  • It forms its own protective oxide layer, and powder coating adds a second barrier on top.

  • In very salty or coastal air it can slowly corrode (pitting) if the coating is damaged: an occasional rinse keeps that at bay.

  • Care is minimal: a wash with mild soapy water a couple of times a year. A quality powder-coated fence commonly lasts 15 to 20 years or more.

Do aluminium fences rust? The science

Rust is a specific thing: it is iron oxide, the flaky orange corrosion that forms when iron reacts with oxygen and moisture. Steel and wrought iron rust because they are mostly iron. Aluminium contains no iron at all, so the chemical reaction that produces rust simply cannot happen: which is exactly why FY’s aluminium panels are described as “100% aluminium, never rusts, rots or warps”.

Aluminium does react with oxygen, but in a helpful way: it forms a thin, hard layer of aluminium oxide on the surface that seals the metal underneath and stops it going any further. That natural layer is why bare aluminium lasts so well outdoors. On a fence, it is backed up by a baked-on powder coating that adds colour and a second protective barrier. Compared with a steel or Colorbond fence (which can rust wherever the coating is scratched or cut) aluminium has a real durability advantage. See how it stacks up in our guides to the best fence for the Queensland climate and aluminium versus Colorbond.

Can aluminium corrode at all?

To be straight with you: aluminium will not rust, but it is not completely immune to corrosion. In harsh, high-salt or acidic conditions (think a home right on the water) aluminium can develop pitting, small surface marks where the protective layer has been broken down over time. This is different from rust, it is far slower, and it is easily prevented.

The powder coating on a quality fence is your first line of defence, and it is the main reason a coated fence is recommended for coastal and high-moisture areas: which is also why it pays to know how to tell a good powder coat from a cheap one before you order. Beyond that, the fix is simple: in a coastal setting, rinse the fence down with fresh water now and then to wash off salt build-up, and touch up any deep scratches so the coating stays sealed. Do that and pitting is very unlikely to ever be an issue.

How to clean an aluminium fence

Cleaning a powder-coated aluminium fence is genuinely easy: no special products required:

  • Hose it down first to shift loose dust, cobwebs and grass clippings.

  • Wash with mild soapy water: a bucket of warm water with a little dishwashing liquid and a soft cloth or sponge is all you need for marks and grime.

  • Rinse clean with fresh water so no soap residue is left to dry on the coating.

  • Avoid abrasives and harsh chemicals: steel wool, scourers, and strong solvents can scratch or dull the powder coat. Skip the high-pressure washer up close for the same reason.

  • Touch up deep chips promptly to keep the coating sealed, especially near the coast.

How often? For most Brisbane homes, a wash a couple of times a year keeps a fence looking sharp. Closer to the water, a more regular fresh-water rinse is worthwhile to keep salt from building up. Timing one of those washes for late spring also gives you the chance to check posts, footings and fixings before storm season while you are already at the fence line.

How long does an aluminium fence last?

With that minimal care, a quality powder-coated aluminium fence commonly lasts 15 to 20 years or more in Australian conditions. Actual lifespan depends on the quality of the coating, how much sun and salt it sees, and whether it gets the occasional clean: inland fences generally last longer, while coastal fences benefit from the odd inspection and rinse.

The powder coat also holds its colour well under the Queensland sun, so the fence keeps looking new rather than fading or chalking the way some finishes do. If you would like to know more about the 10-year warranty on the aluminium, just ask us: we are happy to talk it through.

Coastal and Queensland-climate tips

South East Queensland throws humidity, strong UV and, near the bay and the coast, salt air at a fence. That combination punishes timber (which rots and warps) and steel (which rusts at any scratch), but suits aluminium well. To get the best out of an aluminium fence in these conditions:

  • Near the coast, rinse with fresh water regularly to clear salt, and keep an eye out for any chips in the coating.

  • In full sun, choose a quality powder coat: it is what keeps the colour from fading.

  • In humid, leafy yards, an occasional wash stops mould and grime settling on the surface.

The low-maintenance choice

A fence you can keep looking good with a hose and a bucket of soapy water (and that will not rust, rot or warp) is about as low-maintenance as fencing gets. FY’s aluminium panels are made to order and powder-coated in Black, Monument and White, supply-only or installed across South East Queensland. The same low-maintenance, weather-first thinking runs through the rest of the range, including the insulated panels we supply for carport roofing, which face the same sun, rain and humidity as the fence line.

Frequently asked questions

Do aluminium fences rust?

No. Rust is iron oxide, and it only forms on metals that contain iron, such as steel and wrought iron. Aluminium contains no iron, so it cannot rust. It also forms a natural protective oxide layer and is powder-coated on top, which is why aluminium fences are described as never rusting, rotting or warping.

Can an aluminium fence corrode near the coast?

Aluminium will not rust, but in very salty coastal air it can slowly develop surface pitting if the coating is damaged. It is far slower than rust and easily prevented: a quality powder coat plus an occasional fresh-water rinse to wash off salt keeps a coastal aluminium fence in good condition.

How do I clean an aluminium fence?

Hose it down, then wash with mild soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge, and rinse with fresh water. Avoid abrasive scourers, harsh chemicals and close-up high-pressure washing, as these can scratch or dull the powder coat. Touch up any deep chips to keep the coating sealed.

How often should I clean my aluminium fence?

For most Brisbane homes, a wash a couple of times a year is plenty. Closer to the coast, a more regular fresh-water rinse is worthwhile to stop salt building up on the surface.

How long do aluminium fences last?

With minimal care, a quality powder-coated aluminium fence commonly lasts 15 to 20 years or more in Australian conditions. Lifespan depends on the coating quality and how much sun and salt it is exposed to, with inland fences generally lasting longer than coastal ones.

Is aluminium better than steel or Colorbond for rust?

For rust resistance, yes. Steel and Colorbond are steel-based and can rust wherever the coating is scratched, cut or worn through. Aluminium has no iron to rust in the first place, so it holds up better over time, especially in humid and coastal areas.
