Everything to weigh up before automating your driveway or pedestrian gate: motor types, power options, safety, access control and cost.

Adding automatic gate motors turns your driveway gate into something you open from the car with a remote: convenient, secure and easy on a Queensland summer. The right motor depends on whether your gate slides or swings, how heavy it is, and how you want to power and control it. Here’s what to know before you buy.

Match the motor to your gate

Every motor is rated for a maximum gate weight and length, so the first step is matching it to your gate. Aluminium gates are an advantage here: they’re much lighter than steel or timber, so they’re easier on the motor and tend to last longer between services. A busy household gate that cycles many times a day should use a motor rated for that duty so it isn’t working at its limit.

Power: mains, solar and battery backup

Most motors run off mains power with a battery backup so the gate still opens during a blackout: handy in storm season. Where running power to the gate is difficult, a solar kit with a battery is often the simplest option, which suits a lot of Queensland properties with open, sunny driveways. If you’re weighing that up, our guide to how solar gate openers stack up in Queensland goes through the trade-offs.

Safety features to look for

  • Safety sensors (photocells): stop or reverse the gate if something crosses its path: important with kids, pets and cars.

  • Obstruction detection: the motor senses resistance and stops automatically.

  • Soft start/stop: gentler on the gate and quieter in operation.

  • Manual release: lets you open the gate by hand if the power is out and there’s no backup.

Access control options

Beyond the standard remote controls, you can add a keypad for a PIN code, an intercom so visitors can buzz the house, or phone-based control. Think about how family, guests and deliveries will get in before you decide.

Retrofit or new gate?

Many existing aluminium gates can have a motor added later, as long as the gate and posts are sound and there’s room for the hardware. If you’re buying a new gate anyway, it’s worth planning for automation from the start so the gate, posts and power are all set up for it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I automate my existing gate?

Often yes: if the gate and posts are sound and there’s room for the motor. Lightweight aluminium gates are especially good candidates. Send us a photo and we’ll let you know.

Sliding or swing motor: which do I need?

It follows the gate: a sliding gate uses one sliding motor, a swing gate uses a motor on each leaf. If you’re still choosing the gate, see our sliding vs swing guide.

Will the gate open in a power cut?

With a battery backup or solar-and-battery kit, yes. Motors also have a manual release so you can open the gate by hand if needed.

How much does a gate motor cost?

As a guide, sliding gate motors start from around $770 and swing gate motors from around $1,100, depending on the kit and accessories. See the full driveway gate cost breakdown, or contact us for the right option for your gate.
